THE U.S. FLAG

 • The American Flag is closer to a possible update with the addition of another star.  Yesterday Puerto Rico's electorate voted on a referendum in favor of becoming the 51st state of the United States with over 61% of the vote.  Other choices were remaining a commonwealth (33%) and independence (5%).  They also voted "no" rejecting their status quo as a commonwealth territory of the U.S.--fancy language for colony.

The status of Puerto Rico has been a source of
contentious debate among Puerto Ricans for many decades:

Statehood supporters hope to take their case to the Obama administration.  Congress would have to decide on any change to the Island status.  Puerto Ricans living in the United States are allowed to vote in presidential elections.  This year, the Puerto Rican vote was critical in Florida.  Puerto Rico has a population of 4.5 million.
